Specifically, I mentioned trying to come to an Open House, if at all possible. You may recall that I mentioned how Open Houses are larger events with more opportunities to give you a real feel for the school beyond your basic Campus Tour. Sounding familiar?

Well, I'm back with a new event that I think will be a great opportunity for any of you accepted students out there reading this. It's called the "Overnight Visit," and we here at Newbury try to offer 2 of these each spring for our accepted students. Like the Open House, it's an opportunity for students to really get a feeling for the culture of Newbury. But unlike Open House, and a little more like Accepted Students Day, you also get a feeling of what your incoming class here at Newbury will look like and how you'll mesh, since it is an accepted students only event.

Our first Overnight Visit just passed, and I'm happy to say it was a big success! Students had fun at their evening activities (like tie-dying t-shirts!), got to meet current and future Newbury students, stay overnight in their host students' dorms, and even attend a class and take a tour the next day! It's basically like getting the opportunity to live a day in the life of a Newbury student a whole 6 months early. Sounds fun, huh?

Why not try it out for yourself? Our next event will take place from March 18th to 19th, 2012. If you're an accepted student who's interested in signing up for an Overnight Visit, you can contact Tricia Ryan, our Associate Director of Admissions. And, remember, you can always sign up for a Campus Visit on our website.

Hope to see you on campus soon!

Alex

Top 10 Reasons to Love Newbury College

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would compile a list of the top 10 reasons to love Newbury College. Of course there are many more, but these are my top 10.

10. Free Printing: This may not seem like much to you now if you’re a prospective student. But trust me…once you get to college, you’ll quickly realize just how AWESOME this is.

9. Three Schools, One Campus: For a school with only about 1,000 students, we sure offer a lot of variety! There’s the School of Arts, Science, & Design. Then we have the School of Business. And, of course, there’s also the Roger A. Saunders School of Hotel & Restaurant Management.

8. The Weltman Dining Room: Did I mention that the students from that last school actually run a restaurant on campus? Yum!

7. Triple Deck-ah Tuesday: This is Newbury’s annual Fall Semester activities fair. Find out what clubs are currently active on campus, join any groups you want and, if you see something that’s missing, create your own! You can’t beat an activities fair that’s spelled out just to imitate the local Boston accent.

6. 13 Sports Teams: Check all the Nighthawk Teams out on our Athletics website

5. Career Advice…For Life: With required internships for every major, an online job database, and a 90% placement rating after graduation, you’ll quickly find out how amazing our Career Center is. Did I mention that Newbury grads. have access to this service for life?

4. Teacher Availability: With a 12:1 Student-Teacher ratio and an average class size of 15, there’s no way you’re ever getting lost in this crowd.

3. Diversity: Our student population is 48% AHANA (Asian, Hispanic, African American, Native American).

2. and 1. Best of BOTH Worlds: Newbury is a small, safe, suburban campus just minutes away from big, busy Boston. City and campus are both filled with opportunity. In a place like this, you’ll always have choices.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Alex

“What’s a FAFSA?” And Other Important Financial Aid Info.

Spring means warm weather, studying outdoors, and FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES. For all you high school seniors out there, this spring won’t just be about waiting to hear back from schools and deciding where you’ll be come September. Believe it or not, you still have at least one more thing to apply for. That’s right: Financial Aid.

Every school works a little differently when it comes to Financial Aid and Merit Scholarships. When you apply to Newbury, you automatically apply for our Merit Scholarships. These are based on your GPA on a weighted 4.0 scale at the time you submit your application.

Applying for Financial Aid, however, which is more need-based, is a different process. Here at Newbury, all you have to do to apply for Financial Aid is fill out the FAFSA, or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Some schools also require other forms, but Newbury only requires the FAFSA.

Our priority deadline for the FAFSA is March 1st, but don’t fret! Even if you’re confused, Admissions and Financial Aid Counselors are always willing to help! Here at Newbury, we even have something called Financial Aid Fridays, where you and/or your parents can sign up to meet with Financial Aid in person, one-on-one, and discuss the Financial Aid process.

So, as the weather begins to get warmer and you start to think about graduation and where you’ll be this time next year, remember there’s still something on your “To Do List.” Fill out your FAFSA. And don’t worry. We’re here to help!

Alex

Nighthawk Nation, Edition 3: Meet Ashley

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Nighthawk Nation, where you'll get to "meet" a typical Newbury student!

Ashley Goode is a sophomore at Newbury College and, as corny as it might sound, her name is pretty appropriate. She is really good, if not great, at everything she does. Ashley is very active on campus. She is an Admissions Ambassador, she is also a softball player and an Honors student.

So why did this stellar student decide to come to Newbury? “I was really attracted to the size of the school and especially the class sized. I didn’t want to be ‘just a number’ in college; I wanted the professors to know my face and my name.” And this is definitely what Ashley has encountered here at Newbury. Her experience here has definitely lived up to what she expected, so much so that she decided to become an Admissions Ambassador “so I could share my love of Newbury with prospective students.”

Not only has Ashley been happy with the classroom environment at Newbury, she’s also found that the close-knit community extends to her peers. “My favorite memory from college so far is having movie nights with my friends. So, for Newbury students, Spring Break is right around the corner!

The cool thing about Spring Break is that many students use the time as an opportunity to do something not just fun, but productive. Sure, spring break is also a time to relax, take a breather from school (or catch up on anything if you’re behind!), and have fun, but it’s also a great opportunity to set aside your own worries and help others.

That’s where Newbury’s Alternative Spring Break program comes in. Each year, a group of Newbury students raises money to go on a trip and help out a community in need. Sometimes they work in conjunction with another service-based organization, like Habitat for Humanity, and join a larger group of students and others who want to help out. This year our students are going to New Orleans, to the same area they went 2 years ago, to continue the effort to help rebuild in the areas that were hit hardest and have not yet been able to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

The great thing about Alternative Spring Break is that Newbury students are simultaneously raising money, awareness, and walls for a community in need. And all in one week! And, yes, they still get to explore the cities they visit and have a fun (and rewarding!) Spring Break experience.

What do you guys usually do for Spring Break? Are there any community service organizations you really enjoy working with? Do you usually help out locally or have you taken service trips like this before?

Alex

Welcome Spring Students!

Today is the first day of the Spring 2012 semester here at Newbury, so we here in the Admissions Office just wanted to take some time to wish everyone a happy first day of classes!

First of all, welcome to the new freshmen and transfers! He's currently finishing up his final course online during our Winter Session. Oh, right...and he's applying to law school.

When I asked Jon what he liked most about Newbury, he immediately said he could not pick one thing. For Jon, the best thing about Newbury is a tie between its small class sizes and its location. "I always knew I needed a small college environment; I could never sit in a lecture hall with 300 students and expect to get an education. But, besides that, Newbury also has an ideal location. Here, I can study on a beautiful suburban campus but still enjoy the city life of downtown Boston 3 miles away. It's like having the best of both worlds."

Jon also described how much like a home Newbury feels, and not just now that he's a senior. "I love the fact that Newbury welcomes me and my family with open arms from the very first time I visited campus." Jon's favorite memories of his time at Newbury relate to this as well--they all have to do with the friends has found and the relationships that he has formed in this welcoming environment. "One of the best times I had at Newbury was working on the cotton candy machine with one of my friends during the annual Spring Carnival. It was really fun--especially watching her pick the cotton candy out of her hair when we were done!"

It was this community feeling that first made Jon feel that he could spend four years here, and the feeling has remained strong ever since.

Alex

Two Thousand and Twelve

The New Year is almost here! So, to help all of you out, I decided to dedicate an entry to the most fundamental piece of the application process: the application itself!

The main question I get about the application is about what application students should use. We here at Newbury accept multiple applications: we have our own paper application, our own online application, and the Common Application. And yes, really, we accept any of these applications and do not judge any one above another.

Here is what I recommend: If you're already filling out the Common App., it's probably easier to just send us that. If you're filling it out anyway, why not? If you're not using the Common App. for other schools, then I would suggest filling out our application. It's much shorter than the Common App., so it will save you time and still give us all the necessary information. Our online application gets to us quicker, but if you're more comfortable with paper, that's alright too! (Remember to email, fax, or mail us your essay if you use our online application!)

Makes sense, right? We're just trying to give you options to show yourself in the best light, and to avoid some of the unnecessary stress that comes with application season. So don't worry about trying to figure out if we have a secret plan behind the options. They really are just that: options. No evil plotting involved.

Happy App. Days!

Alex

Finals

Congratulations to all our Newbury students on finishing up their Fall 2011 finals this week! But that doesn't mean you shouldn't stay on top of things! Winter break is almost here and that means that, just around the corner, so is the Spring 2012 semester.

What are the benefits of starting in the spring? Well, if you know you want to transfer, it doesn't necessarily hurt to do it sooner rather than later. Often people who are unhappy at a school start to lose motivation, so changing to a school you like right away may be a good option.

If you've taken time off between high school and college, or even started college but taken a break between years, maybe you're just ready to start up again. Whether you've only been out of school one semester or for plenty of time, sometimes people just get the bug and need to start school again ASAP. So why not start in the spring, if that's when it hits you? (Side note: If you have taken time off of school, we here at Newbury love to hear what you've been doing in the meantime! If you apply and have taken a break, write us a note and let us know how you used that time, and maybe whether you discovered anything new about yourself.)

If you're considering starting in the spring but you aren't sure if it's the right thing for you, you should feel free to talk to an admissions counselor about your concerns. We usually have pretty good advice!

For many schools, spring application deadlines have already passed. Though our recommended application date for the spring (Dec. 1) has, indeed, also passed, we will still be taking applications for the spring through early January. The sooner you sign up, though, the more time you will have to make decisions and the sooner you will know what your future holds! And the more options you'll have for classes and housing. Then you can spring into spring with a spring in your step!

Alex

Nighthawk Nation, Edition 1: Meet Dianivette

Welcome to our newest blog series, Nighthawk Nation! Besides offering you some admissions tips and tricks, we here at Newbury also want you to be able to get to know a little bit about the wonderful students that we’re lucky enough to have here on campus. Which is why, once a month or so, we plan to bring you a profile of a member of Nighthawk Nation!

One of these amazing students is Dianivette, a sophomore Health Care Management major who works with me in the Admissions Office. I knew she loved giving tours (she always says it’s her favorite), but I sat down to chat with her and learn a little more about how she ended up at Newbury.

I started off by asking her what her first experience with Newbury was like. “The first time I visited Newbury College was unimaginable,” she told me. “Like many students, I first came to visit Newbury with my parents during an Open House. I knew Newbury was not a big school, and I was still unsure of what kind of college I wanted to go to.”

So, what did she think of the Open House? “As soon as I got out of the car in the parking lot I was greeted by some of the friendliest people I have ever met, including staff members and Admissions Ambassadors. Throughout the entire Open House I was fascinated by how friendly everyone was and by how much support Newbury offered its students.”

Since Dianivette is now one of those super friendly students who help us with Open House, I was curious to find out how she ended up working with us and what she thought of Newbury now she was here.

Dianivette told me she loves meeting all the prospective students and helping them feel as welcome as she did. That’s why she loves giving tours so much, too. “When the opportunity to become an Ambassador arrived on my doorstep, I did not hesitate. These were the people who helped me decide to come to Newbury; without them, I’m not sure if I would have gotten to know the school and the students so well and so soon.”

D-Vette, as she sometimes calls herself, says she also loves all the friends she’s made since she’s come to Newbury. Apparently our students really have lived up to her first impression! “My favorite memories of college so far are the ones where I was playing video games with a group in my friend Irving’s room, or just going out to Coolidge Corner with people to grab some ice cream from J.P. Licks. That’s when I most feel the friendliness and the support that the entire community offers to everyone, which is why I came here.”

That, and for her major, of course. After she graduates, Dianivette’s dream, she told me, is to work at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. Luckily we still get to enjoy her company here on campus for a couple of more years!

Alex

Happy Thanksgiving from Newbury College!

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for family, friends, and FOOD, OF COURSE!

But, as a high school senior, holiday breaks are also convenient times to catch up on those college applications!

I hope you all have a happy (and productive) Thanksgiving break!

Alex

It's All About The Opportunity

College is all about the opportunities.

And it's not just the opportunity to go to college. Not only do you learn a lot, but these talks and presentations tend to be a lot of fun. What speaker doesn't at least try to make the audience laugh?

And sometimes you get freebies, too (any college kid will tell you half of college turns out to be about SWAG and free food).

Have you been to see any great speakers lately? Who would you most want to see on your campus?

Alex

The College Visit

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, which means so is the end of the fall semester at many colleges. Newbury, for example, is about to host its final Open House of the season. This also means that some of you are probably finishing up your whirl-wind tour of colleges!

Though, for many of you, your college-tour-hopping might be coming to a close, perhaps some of you (especially juniors) have barely begun. Those of you who have already visited Newbury and other schools can probably tell the "newbies" how important the college visit can be (back me up in the comments section, guys!)

Of course, as I mentioned in an earlier post, going to an Open House can be an amazing experience because you get great opportunities to meet not only the admissions staff, but current students and even professors! But visiting campus even on just a "regular tour" can be just as helpful, and really important when making your college decision.

Here at Newbury, most of our tours tend to be small, which gives you more of a chance to experience the campus and talk to both your tour guide and a counselor one-on-one. And there's just nothing that replaces that "vibe" you get when you first step on a college campus. Sometimes knowing where you want to go has a lot to do with that feeling, and that's what makes visiting campus so important.

If you can't come to our last Fall Open House this Saturday, I definitely recommend coming to another on-campus event. Whether we're the last stop on your college list or the first place you're visiting, whether you like to tour colleges in the snowy winter or the flowery springtime, we'd love for you to come check us out in person sometime soon!

Alex

The Application Process: The College Essay

“What should I write in my college essay?”

It’s a big question, and one I can’t give you an easy answer to. But I can try to give you an idea of why Newbury and other colleges have this requirement, and what you can do to make yourself stand out.

Newbury actually has a couple of options when it comes to the essay. You can either turn in a graded piece of writing from the past year or so (comments included) that is 250 words or more, or you can submit the personal essay from the Common App., which is 250-500 words on a topic of your choice (though Common App. does list a few suggestions).

No matter which of these options you choose, the point of this requirement is to learn more about you. We want to know who you are as a person, and your writing tells us a lot about that, whether it’s an academic piece or a personal story. Every writer has a voice, and we want to hear yours!

If you choose to submit a graded piece of work, try to pick a piece from a major subject area, and pick something you’re proud of. We want to see you at your best.

If you choose to submit a personal essay, I suggest brainstorming topics with the people who know you best—teachers, friends, or parents. What makes you you? That’s really what we want to see in this kind of essay, and that’s what makes it exciting to read. Whether the essay ends up being a story about the person who influences you most or a description of how your favorite activity defines you, it doesn’t matter. What matters is getting to know you beyond your transcript, and beyond the classroom.

Want some extra tips?

Make it polished. If you’re accepted to Newbury, your essay is going to be your English placement test. So make sure it’s something you think reflects your writing abilities! It doesn’t hurt to read it over an extra time.

Get a hook. In general, the first sentence of any essay is supposed to draw the reader in. This goes for your college essay as well! Make your first sentence intriguing, and give us a taste of what’s to come.

Happy writing!

Alex

What Does "SAT Optional" Really Mean?

I often get questions about what our average or minimum required SAT scores are. This is a difficult question because Newbury is actually SAT optional. When I tell students and parents this information, I often get skeptical looks.

Believe it or not, at Newbury, “SAT Optional” means SAT optional! (And, yes, this applies to the ACT as well.) If you’re particularly proud of your SAT scores, or if you feel that your SAT scores will give us a better and better-rounded view of you as a student or a person, by all means send them in! But, if you don’t feel you do well on standardized tests, or if you just had a bad morning the day you took your SAT, don’t send it. It won’t count against you if we don’t have them, but if we have them, we will consider them in making our decision!

So why did Newbury decide to become SAT-optional? For a long time, high school students complained about how unfair it was that one morning of your life could have such an effect on the college application process. “Why should a test I take one random Saturday at 8am be more or just as important as 4 years of work in high school?” you wanted to know. Many students also simply don’t test well, specifically with standardized tests. “Why should one test bring down all the hard work I put in studying in school? How does this test reflect what I have actually learned or what I really know?” you asked.

Well, you made some good points (but, no, the same complaints probably won't work for college essays or other requirements!). And some colleges have started to listen. Newbury College happens to be one of them. For those of you who happen to do really well on the SAT or standardized tests, we’re not going to take that away from you. Show us your stuff, and send in those scores! But, for the rest of you, we’re not going to judge you based on one day of your life.

Some of us aren’t morning people either.

Alex

The Application Process: “What is Rolling Admissions?”

If you’re the first one in your family going through the college admission process, you may be a little overwhelmed by all the new terms and jargon you’re seeing on college websites or hearing on campus tours. It’s a whole new world for most people who don’t have older siblings who have already gone through the process and, even for those who do, it can be a bit difficult to adjust to whatever terms have changed even in the past few years.

Newbury College has what is called Rolling Admission. This essentially means that the sooner you apply, the sooner you find out an admissions decision. Unlike other schools for which, no matter when you apply, you have to wait to find out whether you got in until that dreaded first day of April comes around (it’s so cruel that it’s on April Fool’s Day!), our applicants usually receive an admissions decision within about two weeks of applying! This also means we have no official admission deadline, as long as you apply before the semester you wish to enter. This can be very helpful for students in eliminating some of the pressure of college applications.

What we do recommend, simply so that you have time to make a decision on your end, is that you complete your application by April 1st for the fall or December 1st for the spring, that way you have time to breathe before the Deposit Deadlines on May 1st and January 1st (which are extended if you are accepted after these dates).

Newbury College currently does not have any Early Admissions plans, but for more information about how these works you can check out a great explanation on Collegeboard.

So my recommendation to you is: Get Rolling!

Alex

The Application Process: Recommendations

Recommendation letters are an important part of the college process. Almost every college requires one if not two or three recommendation letters, and they can definitely influence an admissions committee’s decision about an application.

For example, Newbury College typically requires 2 letters of recommendation, one from a guidance counselor and another from an English, Math, History/Social Science, Science, or Foreign Language instructor.

So how do you know who to ask to write your recommendation? And what can you do to let your recommenders know you appreciate them helping you with such an important step?

Here are the three best tips I can give you about the college recommendation process:

Ask Early: If you know you’re going to be applying to college, think about what teachers you’d like to write your recommendations and ask them to do so at the end of junior year or at the very beginning of senior year. Many of your classmates may be asking the same teachers, and you probably want to ask before they become overwhelmed.

Choose Wisely: Of course you should choose a teacher who taught you in a class that you did well in. But that shouldn’t be the only thing you think about! Remember that people change a lot during high school, so you probably want to ask a teacher who taught you within the last year. Also try to think about teachers who don’t just know your work, but your personality and your work ethic. Recommendations are important because they help us get to know not just what kind of student you are, but what kind of person you are, and how the two connect. We have your transcript and your essay, but your teachers are the ones who can tie both pieces together.

Help as Much as You Can: Remember that your teachers don’t have to help you. They’re doing this because they want to, so you should show your appreciation by being as helpful as possible. Obviously you can’t write the recommendation for them, but it usually helps to give them a pre-stamped and pre-addressed envelope. You can also make sure to answer any emails or calls from them as soon as possible. Being on top of things will prove to them you care as much as they do!

I hope these tips help you in your college application process! Remember, if you want to find out more about Newbury’s application requirements, you can always check out our website’s “How to Apply” section here: www.newbury.edu/apply

Happy applying!

Alex

Fall Back To School

Happy October, everyone!

Although September is technically “Back to School” time, October really feels like the beginning of fall. Finally, students are settling into their schedules and their new surroundings. Here in the Boston area, the weather is finally starting to act appropriately fall-like. The leaves are finally starting to change color and fall to the ground. Children, parents, and college students are all discussing Halloween costumes.

October is also prime Open House season for colleges and universities. Newbury College’s first Open House is this month, on Sunday, the 23rd.

If you’re really interested in a school, going to an Open House is a great idea. Why? Because Open Houses are like tours x100. That means that, if you attend an Open House, you’re proving that you’re interested in the school x100. Not only does going to this kind of event give you a real feeling for the school environment, not only does it help you decide if it’s a good fit for you, but it shows the school you’re truly interested and enthusiastic about applying and attending.

Newbury’s Open Houses are special for a few other reasons as well. Not only do you get the standard campus tour from a student and information session from an Admissions Representative and a Financial Aid Counselor, you also get to take mock classes, meet professors and staff, and hear about Newbury from a student's perspective! Best of all, if you’re really excited about Newbury, we use our Open Houses as “Decision Days.” This means that, if you bring in your completed application with all the required documents, we will review it and give you an admissions decision right on the spot!

If you think Newbury might be the place for you, you should definitely check out one of our Open Houses. The first one, as I mentioned, is on Sunday, October 23rd. But if that doesn’t work out for you, you can also check out our second Open House on Saturday, November 19th. You can sign up for these and any other on-campus events on our website, here: Newbury College On-Campus Events

Hope to see you on campus soon!

Alex

Welcome to Our New Admissions Blog!

Hello out there in college application land!
